WOW!!!

I’ve never been an Apple fanboy. I was late jumping into the iPod bandwagon. I proudly toted around my iRiver ihp-120 (the 20 gig iRiver Jukebox) until it died and was informed that it would cost me more than a brand new unit to repair; which prompted my decision to shun my non-conformist ways and join the hordes of white earphone users. I got myself the 1st gen 4 gig nano and I was quite happy with it, it worked as it should, and when I get problems with it, which is next to nil, I can be assured of quality customer service.

When the rumor mills started churning about the Apple iPhone, honestly, I was skeptical. Most people change their mobile phones (well, at least in the Philippines) on average, once a year. Which made me not want to bundle my iPod into a phone that I would have to sell off in a year to purchase the newer, shinier, techier product. Then I heard Kevin Rose’s leaks, touchscreen, pull-out keyboard, dual battery, . . . and I started getting the itch.

Now it’s official. It runs OSX. Wi-Fi with Edge. Quadband. Dual Battery. Touchscreen. Synchs with iTunes. Widgets compatible. 2 megapixel camera. Widescreen video playback. This is it. This was the touchscreen widescreen iPod video that the industry was waiting for, except it came with mobile telephony functions. I’m really drooling.

The drawback? It comes with a hefty price tag. $599 for the 8 gig version, and $499 for the 4 gigers. Out 1st quarter of 2008 in Asia (mid 2007 in the US, and last quarter 2007 in Europe). Some people would argue that its a justified price, but for me the point of a convergence product is that it should be cheaper since it combines a few technologies in a neat little package. Granted that the iPhone is as pretty and as neat as a convergence product, I don’t get their thinking that the ipod is 200 bucks and the phone is 300, so the total should be 500. It makes no sense.

My fervent wish? It’s that I become a good boy this 2007 and Santa gives me an 8 gig iPod this christmas. :)

Oh, one last thing, I’m worried that I have fat fingers which would make it hard for me to use the non stylus iPhone.

iWant!

    It’s a beauty, but…

    it has no 3G,
it will be at least 300$ with a contract,
and will be aviable in Europe soonest at the end of the year.
I will throw out my ‘old’ N95 then… and change to E90i… ;)

Oh, and it’s not a smartphone!
You won’t be able to install 3rd party apps on it, only Apple ones…

iPhone is looks and no substance.

Nice GUI but shame about the closed platform.
