Capdase Leather Case for the E61

I went to a local gadget shop this afternoon because I was tipped off that they carry a Capdase Leather Case for the E61. I’ve always known Capdase as a good quality brand that sells a lot of ipod cases, hence my optimism. It was being sold for PHP950 (roughly USD$20), made in good quality leather that doesn’t feel cheap to touch.

I wasn’t able to take photos because it wasn’t allowed (err . .. I didn’t ask, but I assumed that taking photos of merchandise is a no no) but it looks similar to the photo above (taken from a chinese auction site). The one on display here is fliptop (unlike the billfold model above) and in plain conservative black. When you flip open the leather case, you see two extra memory card storage slots which I found totally unnecessary.

The E61 is secured to the leather case by the plastic overlay that hugs to lower part of the E61. I took off the silicone case from my mobile and tried it on. I found it a bit odd because once the E61 is nestled underneath the plastic overlay it made the keypad buttons less distinguishable from each other. I would’ve preferred they covered the screen with that plastic thingie since it would also act as a screen protector.

The E61 inside the leather case felt secure. Once the fliptop case is closed, it felt sleek enough that the added size to the phone wasn’t considerable. I went to the store with the intention to purchase one, and I left with my E61 still clothed by my Pivot Silicone Case.

It’s also weird that on the Capdase website, the fliptop or billfold leather case for the E61 wasn’t listed as one of their products.

Certificate Error when installing Themes and Apps

I didn’t blog about this problem earlier because a lot of the other blogs has covered this topic pretty well. But looking at the list of google keyword searches for my blog yielded this topic as one of the top queries. So here goes.

If you get a Certificate Error when installing themes or certain apps, go to Tools > App. Mgr. and then select Options > Settings

Software installation should be All, and Online Certif Check should be Off.

I just keep this setting as is, as I don’t want to be troubled with changing settings every time I add an unsigned application. But this is another layer of security for the Symbian device. Others deem it unnecessary, but malware does abound. A word of caution, just be careful with what apps you install and from where you get your apps from.

New Proggies for the E61

I’ve heard some users have issues with the built in Calendar software in the E61. Honestly, I don’t use the calendar function all that much. I’ve purchased Palms and Ipaqs before only to sell them a week after.

There are two new applications that will be released pretty soon. AquaCalendar and Papyrus. I was able to obtain a beta version copy of Papyrus and I’m liking it. One thing that I like with Papyrus is that every calendar entry made is also reflected on the E61 calendar software, so it will still show up on the standby screen. As far as I know, the Papyrus beta version isn’t available to the public.

The beta version of AquaCalendar can be obtained here. I haven’t tried it, but from what I’ve read, it looks like a solid alternative.

There is also a customized version of Calcium specifically for E61/E62 users. The new version is for those users with the upgraded firmware to do away with the annoying blue function key combo to key in numbers.

Updated the Tips and Shortcuts for Messaging, Calender, Document and General Menu Navigation

Check out the tips page.  It’s been updated!

Thank you.

I started out this blog as someone who just couldn’t contain the excitement of owning a Nokia E61. I wanted an avenue to write, rant and help out other E61 users as we figure out the strengths and stubborness of the new Symbian device. I wanted a place where users post tips and help each other out to personalize the phone to suit their needs. I guess a forum would’ve been a more logical choice, but I also wanted it to be personal; how the E61 is integrating into my daily life.

Now, almost a month later, Techmundo 2.0 has hit over 50,000 page views; I’m corresponding with E61 users from Russia to Singapore to the United States; I start my daily regimen opening up related E61 blogs, reading forums and checking out links sent by my friends, etc etc.

Also, I would like to thank the other sites that post links to my blog. (Based on my ShortStat plugin)

Most of these links are also in my blogroll. One thing though that I’ve been noticing is a whole lot of possessive pronouns on these sites (and on my blog as well). E61 users are a possessive bunch! LOL!

Free IM Chat Software

A friend of mine swears by this.  Forget paying 30 bucks for AgileMessenger or IM+, mig33 has free MSN and YM chatting.  Send me your comments as I haven’t had a chance to try this out yet, from their website they also have VoIP solutions and International SMS sending at cheaper rates.

I’ll give this one a go once my router gets fixed.

Animal Prints are In!

I never thought I’d like it but like the last 3 themes I got the for the E61 (this snake skin inspired theme, plus S60’s Turquoise and the LightBlueOrange Themes) are the best I’ve seen for the phone.

I have 2 simple criteria for selecting good themes for the E61, speed and readability. I’m all for new themes, but the E61’s standby screen needs to be readable. And gettting these three themes made me realize that some themes I’ve used in the past considerably slowed down my phone.

I like this particular theme because it is very usable (the standby screen is easily readable) and it has a hint of whimsy, which always gets good marks in my book. I will be anticipating the new themes that Xamon will churn out for the E61.

E-series seems to have the scoop these days on new themes. :) Thanks Ed for the report.
