Bye-bye Cheapo Audio Adapter!

I finally threw away the USD$3.50 Made in China audio adapter that I bought last week. It was giving me too much trouble. I have to plug it in a couple of times before it gets recognized by the phone and I was getting worried that it might eventually damage my pop port. So today, to the garbage bin it went!

I went to Greenhills and I finally bought the Nokia AD-15. I shopped around and found that I really had just two choices. I chose the AD-15 over the AD-46 simply because it had a much shorter cable. The AD-15 can only do one thing, which is to provide for a headphone output jack for nokia users via the pop port. The AD-46, on the other hand, has much more features such as integrated FM antenna, remote control, built-in microphone, volume control and a clip attachment. I figured out that I really didn’t need the other features that the AD-46 offered, and for half the price and maybe one-tenth of the cable length, the AD-15 will make a handy addition to my E61 arsenal.

There are other audio adapters by nokia, but most of them have built in earphones, and I wanted to be able to use my own.

More Themes . . . or not . . .

I like themes; I can’t get enough of them, but sadly for the E61, there aren’t enough good ones available. Currently I’m happy with S60 Metal Theme but it does have some quirks since it really isn’t for the E61.

I came across a link to Mobile9 a while back and they do seem to have a lot of themes available. In fact, they have 22 pages worth of themes for the E61. But any Nokia E61 user will quickly notice that most of the themes they have in there aren’t really for our phones but for the S60 3rd Edition mobile phones which have different screen dimesions as the E61.

I scrolled through all the available themes for the E61 and they have 10 to 15 that really are for the E61. Armed with patience and a keen eyesight, I gathered some themes for your viewing pleasure (some that are for the E61 and some that are clearly not).

I found three themes that caught my eye that was created specifically for the E61.

Nature Art (Beautiful graphics, the texts are hard to read though)

Mac (note the tackiness of the iPod Signal and Battery Meter)

and BlackSoul

I also found 3 themes that I thought would fit the E61 well even if the image will turn out stretched.

Deviant, Jessy

and Glamur

Sadly, none of the six themes I installed really worked as I would’ve wanted. I ended up deleting every single theme I tried out.

Argh! The Nokia E62 . . .

I love my E61, but I have to admit there are some things about it that bug me. I don’t synch my phone to my computer so the pop-port synch cable doesn’t bother me that much (and the cable IS included in the E61 package). What bothers me more is the idea of having to buy a pop port music adaptor so that I could connect my earbuds to the E61.

Phonescoop has some images of the newly released Nokia E62, and although it lacks 3G network support and Wi-fi connectivity, I am so envious that the E62 has built in earphone jack and mini-usb port.

Uh-oh. Something weird just happened to my E61.

Uh-oh.

I was playing with the trial version of Advanced Call Manager and my phone buzzed, and it kept on vibrating.  I had no alarm set, no one sent me a text message nor gave me a call.  I quickly shut off the phone and when I turned it on, it was back to normal.  The first sign of weirdness on my E61; I hope nothing freaky happens.

Pivot Silicone Case for the E61

I finally received the Pivot Silicone case I ordered from Hong Kong yesterday afternoon. The USD$16.50 silicone case arrived two weeks after I ordered it from the Pivot Online Store. I paid USD$2.50 for registered mail shipping (HK to Philippines) which they said should take 5 to 14 days.

Their website showed two different colors available for the E61 — a frosty white and a graphite grey version. I opted for the grey colored case and when I opened the package I was less than impressed. The silicone case came in a generic looking box that was squashed by the postal system.

I clothed the Nokia E61 with the silicone case and it fits nicely. Not as snug as I would’ve like, but I think the general shape of the E61 prohibits the creation of a case that would nicely hug the phone. The Nokia E61 has narrow strips of areas that the silicone case tried to cover (like the buttons and joystick at the center, and the bottom lip of the phone) and in these areas, the silicone case just doesn’t feel snug. Although I must admit that the case is nicely manufactured. The seams of the case are trimmed cleanly.

Holding the phone with the silicone case attached feels nice. The closest description I could come up with is that it feels velvety. The silicone case manages to soften the cold metallic feel of the phone. In the end, it does its job well, the Pivot Silicone Case protects the E61 from dings and scratches that will most likely plague most handheld electronic device.

I encountered some probles with the silicone case. Having a silicone case attached to the phone obviously added some thickness to phone (not by much, because it is very very thin), but the added thickness made operating the joystick troublesome — when before, the joystick stuck out a little bit from the phone, now it’s almost at the same level with everything else). The same is true with the keys at the corners the keyboard (Q, P, Blue Function Key and Chr), the silicone made it harder to press by a tiny bit.

Overall, I like the fact that my E61 is protected from the elements. I am not known to be a good caretaker of my devices, so I try to cover with screen protectors and silicone case every single item I possess. The Pivot Silicone Case may not be a perfect solution to your phone’s protection, but it does the job adequately.

The Pivot Silicone Case is rated 3/5.

The search for the nicest E61 case continues . . .

Brownie points for those who can guess what book I used to prop up the E61 and the box for the photo. :)
