Planning for Singapore, Adobe Reader LE and Google Maps
I’ve been quite busy for the past few days planning for my upcoming Singapore trip. I’ll be leaving for Singapore on the 4th of October with a few of my friends and will be staying there till the 10th. This will be my second time to visit Singapore and I’m quite excited not just to visit the sites but also to try out the capabilities of E61.
I loaded up some city maps of Singapore and I’m quite disappointed by the results. I used Adobe Reader LE and this is what I got.

The image on the left is a 1.5mb file that details Singapore street map, while the one on the right is a 650kb overview of popular sites and hotels in Singapore. These images are, to be honest, useless! I can’t make out the street names, I can’t discern any information from the map. And after a few tries of zooming in and out of the map, I got a Low Memory Error.
I also managed to get my hands on a 650kb chart of their MTR station in GIF format which yielded a much better result.

I saw another PDF reader the other day and I’ll try it out with the maps I got. Or maybe I just go really old fashioned and go get myself a map of Singapore from the local bookstore.
Also, I’ve read a lot of people raving about Google Maps on the E61 and I couldn’t help but disagree. My router broke last week so I can’t post any pictures from gmaps, but try searching for Singapore or the Philippines and any other country thats not the United States or probably the bigger European countries and you get nothing but the shape of the place (in the map view). There is very little detail on Google Maps that will be useful for me.
I’ll try to update the post in a little while with photos from gmaps.

Have to agree - Acrobat is pretty lame on the E61. I find most text impossible to read even when you zoom in.
I did track down an interesting app for you though with a quick google…

Thanks thanks thanks
I’ll check it out. no trial though. grumble grumble hehe
When I lived in Singapore, usually I use streetdirectory.com.sg to find places. Not sure if this can be viewed nicely on E61.
antony. thanks
weird, I was checking my site stats just now and I saw one of the keywords that referred to my site is “how to spell antony” hahaha
simple…get yourself a bluetooth GPS (ca. $80) and use the free Nav4all.com navigation software on your E Series phone. I just checked and they cover Singapore (NavTeQ). I have been using Nav4all for about 4 Months now all around europe and it works very well. By foot, car or bike, very helpful, never get lost again
Enjoy,
Jay
Ack! $80 bucks?!?!? thats expensive!!! hehehe
