Sticky!!! Tips for the E61 Standby Screen V.1.0 (updated 09.13.06)
Here are my tips to optimize the standby screen for the Nokia E61.

1. Set the Active Standby Mailbox to INBOX. This is located in Tools > Settings > Phone > Standby Mode (then scroll down); on the older firmware, this can be found as one of the Options item in your Messaging Folder.

What this will do is show the first two inbox items in your standby screen. Although I would rather have ONLY my unread messages show up in the standby screen, having this in your standby screen gives you instanT access to your inbox, which will free up a slot for another application in the Active Standby Apps.
2. Make use of your Active Standby Apps wisely. Place your most used application in the very first slot. In my case, it’s Create New Text Message — it’s not Inbox, it’s not Create New Message, it’s Create New Text Message because this will go straight to the creating a new text message. Doing so eliminates unneeded steps that will make your task unnecessarily longer.

There are only 7 slots in the Standby bar, so choose wisely. Choose programs and applications that you use on a daily basis.
3. File Manager is a good program to put in the Standby bar. Having it in there allows you to quickly open any audio, video, picture, document, etc. without having to open a specific program.
4. Do not put Connectivity items such as Bluetooth and IR in the Standby Bar, for there are shortcut keys to trigger them. You’ll save an extra slot or two.
- for Bluetooth it’s Blue Function Key + Ctrl (and not the other way around)
- for IR, Blue Function Key + Chr
5. For the two softkeys at the bottom of the screen, don’t put anything on the left slot that you’ll use consistently. Every single program loaded from that slot will take too long to load. I used to put Widgets in there, but I’m too impatient. The reason for the sluggishness for ANY program loaded from that slot is that your phone is always waiting for a second key when you click that button. Left Softkey + Blue Function Key locks your phone’s keypad, and your phone waits a couple of seconds before loading the program because it has to make sure that the softkey was pressed not to lock the keypad, but to load the program.
I’m pretty sure that the more I use this phone and the more software for the 3rd version of S60 phones are made available, there will be more tweaks to have our most used applications easily accessible from the Standby screen, and as such, this is version 1 of the standby screen tips.

Nice post, keep it up.
thanks
awesome tips!
Thanks for your comments
Great tips.
What is that theme you are using? I don’t think I have seen that one before.
thanks rob.
it’s an s60 metal theme. it’s technically not for the E61 because there are some “defects” (like if you’re typing the http address of the website, the address bar just looks like a fat white stripe.
I like using it for this blog because its colorful. I’ll try to post a link to the theme in a little bit. I still have to do a search
@Rob,
the theme can be downloaded here. note that it’s not 100% compatible with the E61 but it’s usable.
can you please tell me where you found the theme you are using is very attactive
Regards

@roberto. hi. i got a lot of emails regarding the theme I used but honestly I don’t know how to answer your questions. bec. I got the theme from the link and I didnt remember them having 2 versions. I don’t know if they changed the theme now or I’m just lucky that it worked on my phone. i’ll try to find the original sis file i used to install on my phone and upload it on the site.
Could you help me how can I adjust that the backgroung of the e-mail is white and the letters are black, please
Thanks
Laszlo
@Laszlo, just change the theme
OK, but for what ???
I need white background and black letters
Pleeeease
@laszlo
why not try the s60 white theme? i posted a link a few posts ago
Thanks agwe23. This is what I did, but now it looks very white
However at least I can read my mails
hehe. i like the s60 white theme. a bit feminine, but its very clean
I haven’t got “Active standby mailbox”. Do i need software upgrade for that?
in the old firmware, it’s in one of the options in Messaging. In the new firmware, it’s located in the standby screen settings.
Anyone still have problem to install the S60 Metail theme? I just download and install it. They now have three version. One is specifically for E61. I dont see any problem for me so far.

Yoo this is great,, thanks for the tip….I always get in trouble when trying to fix a theme…
i have a thread of s60 e3 apps at http://secentral.net/forum/index.php?topic=13707.0
lottas reviews of registered s60 e3 stuff on my e61
i really love this sucker
my only beef is that it takes ever so long to goto menu
and ever so long to open folders
- i keep saying i got a lot of folders and lottas stuff in folders
my 2 gig mini sd is almost full
should this be the case
and i have to live with it unti e61i appears
or is there any way to speed things up?
btw i assign gobible to the left softkey
sure it takes a few more seconds to appear
but it’s fast enough
thanks
Pressing C (delete button) while your on top of an icon in the menu will open the Installer to delete that application. (Works on my Nokia E60)
