Sticky!!! Do It Yourself E61 Firmware Upgrade
The Nokia E61 firmware upgrade is now available at Nokia’s Website via NSU (Nokia Software Updater). Read the FAQ carefully as you don’t want to render your lovely new phone worthless by doing it incorrectly.
Updated firmware for the other E-series phones are also available.
Tip: Connect your E-series phones to your charger while doing the firmware upgrade. One sure way to ruin your phone is to have it run out of battery while updating the firmware.
Note: The latest firmware for the E-61 is 2.0618.06.05 RM-89. NSU is currently available for Windows ONLY.

Well I have tried everything I can, but I just can’t get the USB cable connection to work, so can’t upgrade the software.
I can connect by Bluetooth without a problem, but the Updater needs a hard-wired connection.
Done the obvious things: Completely uninstalled PC Suite and then ran a registry cleaner to get rid of Nokia related entries. Then installed the latest version of PC Suite. Still no joy!
When I look under Device Manager it shows that there is a cable attached, but it has a warning to say that the device drivers are not installed. tried installing them manually, but couldn’t get that to work either.
Any ideas?
have you tried rebooting with the phone plugged in to the usb port?
hello, funny thing, i have everything down pat with my E61 and i downloaded the Nokia Software Updater.
But when I search for updates, it says that there are no updates available for my phone. And my firmware is still 1.0610.04.04
Do you have any thoughts on this? My E61 is unlocked so I can’t quite figure it out:p
Thanks!
@Mark Tesch
I have the same problem
@mark, you had it upgraded right? at brightpoint? i,ve been hearing problems about the diy firmware upgrade. it’s not perfect, but it’s nice to be able to upgrade your own firmware, especially for those who bought grey market units.
A few things:
1. Update only available for cetain devices (IMEI codes) - CAUTION: Don’t force it, you may loose a lot of things, including keyboard mappings. Word of Advice: WAIT!!
2. Known bugs with running NSU on Windows
I had Nokia confirm that Australian E61 handsets will work with upgrade s/w in 2 weeks. “Wiseguy” is right that the upgrade s/w does an IMEI check
